Failed the PA road test? Here's what happens next
Failing the road test feels like a disaster on the day. It isn't: Pennsylvania gives you three tries on one permit, the wait is short, and the reason you failed is usually one fixable habit.

Failed the Road Test?: the essentials
Plenty of good drivers fail a first attempt, often on one moment of nerves: a rolled stop, a missed head-check, an upright touched while parallel parking. The rules below tell you exactly how long you wait, what paperwork you need, and when a permit runs out.
Then comes the part that decides the next result: working out what cost you the test and practicing that, not everything.
How many times you can take the road test
You can take the road test up to three times on each learner's permit. After a third fail, or once the permit's one year runs out, you extend it on Form DL-31, which costs $6 and is sent by mail or taken in person: permit renewals can't be done online. Each extension lasts a year, and it doesn't mean a new physical or a new knowledge test.
There is one hard limit. If you haven't passed the road test within three years of the physical exam on your permit application, you start over: a new Form DL-180, a new physical and the knowledge test again.
How long you wait before a retest
- Under 18: seven days after a failed test.
- 18 and older: at least one day.
- Book, reschedule or cancel online on PennDOT's scheduling page (you need your driver number, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number) or by phone at 717-412-5300. Road tests can't be booked for the same day.
- Your documents are needed again: the permit, the car's original registration and insurance card, the accompanying driver's license and, under 18, Form DL-180C.
What fails the PA road test
PennDOT's Driver's Manual says you fail if you drive dangerously, break a traffic law, cause a crash, don't follow the examiner's instructions or make too many driving errors. Its examples include not being able to work a vehicle control, not stopping at a stop sign, errors in safe-driving practices and not using turn signals.
In the parallel park you have one attempt and no more than three adjustments, and touching an upright, crossing the painted line or going up onto the curb fails the maneuver. Two things stop the test before it starts: a car that is unsafe or doesn't meet inspection requirements, and documents that aren't originals. How to pass next time
- Write down what went wrong as soon as you leave, while you still remember the exact moment.
- Practice that, specifically. A rolled stop is fixed by counting a full stop at every sign for a week. A parking fail is fixed by parking between two markers until three adjustments feel like plenty.
- Drive near the center. Examiners use the streets around their own center, so an hour on them takes away the surprises.

How many times can you fail the road test in PA? +
You get three attempts on each learner's permit. After the third fail you extend the permit on Form DL-31 ($6) and can keep testing, as long as it's within three years of the physical exam on your permit application.
How long do you have to wait to retake the road test in PA? +
Seven days if you're under 18, and at least one day if you're 18 or older.
Does it cost money to retake the PA road test? +
PennDOT's fee list has no separate charge for a road test. What can cost money is extending your permit ($6 on Form DL-31) and, if you choose one, a third-party testing site, which sets its own fee.
What happens if my permit expires before I pass? +
Extend it on Form DL-31. The extension lasts a year. If three years have passed since the physical exam on your permit application, you start over with a new application, physical and knowledge test.
