Learning to drive in Philadelphia: what's different

Most of Center City and the neighborhoods around it are a grid of numbered one-way streets. The first thing we teach here is reading the grid before you turn: which way the next block runs, which lane you need to be in a block early, and how to turn left from a one-way street onto another one.

City driving is mostly about everything that isn't a car. We practice around SEPTA buses pulling out from stops, trolley tracks in West Philadelphia and along Girard Avenue, bike lanes, double-parked delivery vans, and pedestrians who step out between parked cars — so you learn to scan early instead of braking late.

Roosevelt Boulevard has inner express lanes and outer local lanes, with traffic lights and turns across both. We build up to it after the grid, then add the I-95 and Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) ramps, where short merges are the real skill, once you're ready for higher speeds.

Philadelphia learners test at the city's PennDOT centers, and a lot of Northeast Philadelphia tests at Bensalem. Wherever you test, your last lessons are on that center's route, and parallel parking between real cars on a city block is part of every course.
