  8. When parking uphill next to a curb, turn your front wheels:
Answer: Away from the curb. Uphill with a curb: turn wheels away from the curb so the car rolls into it if brakes fail.
  9. You may turn right at a red light:

Answer: 4 feet of clearance. PA's safe-passing law requires at least 4 feet when overtaking a bicycle.
  19. A red octagonal sign means:
Answer: Stop completely. An eight-sided red sign is always a stop sign — come to a complete stop.
  20. A yellow diamond-shaped sign is used for:
Answer: General warnings about road conditions ahead. Diamond-shaped yellow signs warn of hazards ahead — curves, crossings, merges.
  21. An orange sign shape signals:
Answer: A construction or work zone. Orange is reserved for temporary construction/maintenance signs.
  22. A triangular sign pointing downward at an intersection means:
Answer: Yield the right-of-way. The downward-pointing triangle is the yield sign.
  23. A circular sign along the road usually warns of:
Answer: A railroad crossing ahead. Round signs are traditionally used for advance railroad-crossing warnings.
  24. A green traffic light with a steady arrow pointing left means:
Answer: You may turn left; oncoming traffic must yield. A green arrow gives a protected turn — oncoming traffic has a red light.
  25. A flashing red traffic signal should be treated the same as:
Answer: A stop sign. Flashing red means stop, then proceed when safe, exactly like a stop sign.
  26. A flashing yellow traffic signal means:
Answer: Slow down and proceed with caution. Flashing yellow warns you to slow and proceed carefully — no full stop required.
  27. White pavement markings on a two-way road separate:
Answer: Lanes moving in the same direction. White lines separate lanes going the same direction; yellow separates opposing traffic.
  28. A solid white line along the right edge of the roadway marks:
Answer: The edge of the roadway (the shoulder line). The solid white edge line marks where the travel lane ends and the shoulder begins.
  29. At an intersection with no signs or signals, right-of-way belongs to:
Answer: The vehicle already in the intersection, or the one arriving first. Whoever enters the intersection first (or is already there) has the right-of-way; if you arrive together, yield to the vehicle on your right.
  30. When turning left, you must yield to:
Answer: Oncoming traffic and pedestrians in your path. A left turn yields to all oncoming vehicles and any pedestrians crossing your path.
  31. At a four-way stop where all vehicles arrive at the same time, right-of-way belongs to:
Answer: The vehicle on the right of each driver. Yield to the driver on your right when everyone stops together.
  32. Entering a roundabout, you must yield to:
Answer: Traffic already circulating in the roundabout. Vehicles already in the roundabout have the right-of-way; wait for a safe gap before entering.
  33. A pedestrian who has already stepped into a marked crosswalk has:
Answer: The right-of-way over vehicles. Once a pedestrian is lawfully in the crosswalk, drivers must yield until they clear.
  34. When two vehicles approach an uncontrolled T-intersection, the vehicle on the road that ends must:
Answer: Yield to traffic on the through road. Traffic on the road that ends must yield to traffic on the continuous through road.
  35. Merging onto a highway, you should:
Answer: Match the speed of traffic and merge into a gap. Use the ramp to build up speed and merge smoothly into an available gap.
  36. If a traffic officer's hand signals conflict with a traffic light, you should:
Answer: Always obey the officer. An officer's directions override traffic signals and signs.
  37. When backing out of a driveway into traffic, right-of-way belongs to:
Answer: Vehicles and pedestrians already on the roadway. Traffic already on the road always has the right-of-way over a vehicle entering it.
  38. Two vehicles turning left from opposite directions at the same intersection should:
Answer: Pass each other, turning into their own nearest lane. Opposing left-turning vehicles pass driver's-side to driver's-side into their respective near lanes.
  39. Unless posted otherwise, Pennsylvania's speed limit on most rural undivided highways is:
Answer: 55 mph. Absent other posting, 55 mph is the default limit on most PA roads outside business/residential districts.
  40. The 4-second following-distance rule should be increased when:
Answer: Visibility or traction is reduced. Add more following distance in rain, fog, snow, or when following large vehicles that block your view ahead.
  41. Stopping distance is the sum of:
Answer: Reaction distance and braking distance. Total stopping distance equals the distance traveled while reacting, plus the distance needed to brake to a stop.
  42. Driving too slowly for conditions:
Answer: Can be just as dangerous as speeding and may be cited. Impeding the normal flow of traffic without cause can be a violation, just like speeding.
  43. In Pennsylvania, fines for speeding in an active work zone are:
Answer: Doubled. PA doubles fines for speeding violations in active work zones.
  44. Black ice is most likely to form first on:
Answer: Bridges and overpasses. Bridges and overpasses lose heat from both sides and freeze before the rest of the road.
  45. When your brakes fail, you should first:
Answer: Pump the brake pedal and shift to a lower gear. Pumping the brakes can build pressure, and downshifting uses engine braking to slow the car.
  46. Tailgating (following too closely) is dangerous mainly because it:
Answer: Reduces the time you have to react and stop. Following too closely removes your margin for reacting if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly.
  47. You may not pass another vehicle when:
Answer: Approaching within 100 feet of an intersection, bridge or railroad crossing. Passing is prohibited near intersections, bridges, tunnels and railroad crossings, and wherever a no-passing zone is marked.
  48. A solid yellow line on your side of the center line means:
Answer: You may not pass. A solid yellow line on your side prohibits passing; a broken yellow line permits it when safe.
  49. Before changing lanes, you should:
Answer: Signal, check your mirrors, and check your blind spot. Always signal and physically check the blind spot in addition to mirrors before changing lanes.
  50. On a multi-lane one-way street, you may legally pass another vehicle:
Answer: On either the left or the right. One-way, multi-lane roads allow passing on either side since all lanes move the same direction.
  51. When two lanes merge into one, the proper practice is:
Answer: Zipper merging — alternating one vehicle from each lane. Zipper merging (alternating turns) keeps traffic moving smoothly and safely.
  52. You must signal a turn or lane change for at least:
Answer: 100 feet before turning in business/residential areas. PA requires signaling at least 100 feet before turning at speeds under 35 mph — about 300 feet at higher speeds.
  53. A U-turn is prohibited:
Answer: In business districts unless a sign permits it, or where you can't be seen for 500 feet. U-turns are barred in business districts (absent a permitting sign) and anywhere visibility is limited.
  54. Driving on the paved shoulder to pass slower traffic is:
Answer: Not permitted. The shoulder is for emergencies and disabled vehicles, not for passing.
  55. When entering a lane of moving traffic from a stop, you must:
Answer: Yield to traffic already in that lane. A vehicle entering traffic always yields to traffic already established in the lane.
  56. The proper hand signal for a left turn, if signals aren't used, is:
Answer: Arm straight out, pointing left. Left arm straight out horizontally signals a left turn; bent upward signals right; bent downward signals stop/slow.
  57. You may not park within ___ of a fire hydrant.
Answer: 15 feet. PA law prohibits parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
  58. You may not park within ___ of a stop sign or traffic signal at an intersection.
Answer: 30 feet. No parking within 30 feet of an approach to a stop sign or traffic control signal.
  59. Parking is prohibited:
Answer: On the traveled part of a highway outside a business/residential district, if it obstructs traffic. You can't park on the roadway itself outside a town where it would block the flow of traffic — pull fully off if you must stop.
  60. When parking downhill next to a curb, you should turn your front wheels:
Answer: Toward the curb. Downhill with a curb: turn wheels toward the curb so the car rolls into it if the brakes fail.
  61. When parking on a hill with no curb, you should turn your wheels so the car rolls:
Answer: Toward the shoulder or edge, away from traffic. Without a curb, angle the wheels so a rolling car would head for the shoulder, not into traffic.
  62. Double-parking (stopping alongside a parked vehicle in the travel lane) is:
Answer: Not permitted. Double-parking blocks the lane and is illegal, regardless of how briefly.
  63. When you must stop on the shoulder for an emergency, you should:
Answer: Pull as far off the roadway as possible and use flashers/warning devices. Get fully off the road if possible, turn on hazard lights, and use flares or triangles if you have them.
  64. You may not park in a space marked for accessible/handicapped parking unless:
Answer: Your vehicle displays a valid placard or plate for that purpose. Accessible spaces are reserved for vehicles displaying a valid disability placard or plate, no exceptions for a quick stop.
  65. Pennsylvania's 'implied consent' law means:
Answer: Refusing a chemical test after a lawful DUI arrest results in an automatic license suspension. By driving in PA, you've already agreed to chemical testing if lawfully arrested for DUI; refusal triggers an automatic suspension.
  66. For a driver 21 or older, the general legal blood alcohol limit (BAC) in Pennsylvania is:
Answer: 0.08%. 0.08% BAC is the general per se DUI limit for adult drivers in PA.
  67. For a commercial driver operating a CDL vehicle, the BAC limit is:
Answer: 0.04%. Commercial drivers face a stricter 0.04% BAC limit.
  68. Open containers of alcohol in the passenger area of a moving vehicle are:
Answer: Prohibited. PA's open container law prohibits open alcohol containers in the passenger compartment.
  69. Mixing alcohol with certain medications can:
Answer: Intensify impairment beyond the alcohol alone. Combining alcohol with many medications, prescription or over-the-counter, can dangerously increase impairment.
  70. Driving under the influence of a legally prescribed medication that impairs you:
Answer: Can still be a DUI if it affects your ability to drive safely. PA's DUI law also covers impairment from any drug, including legally prescribed ones.
  71. PA's 'Zero Tolerance' law for drivers under 21 sets the BAC threshold at:
Answer: 0.02%. Drivers under 21 can be charged with DUI at just 0.02% BAC.
  72. After a first DUI conviction with a low BAC and no prior record, a common outcome is:
Answer: Possible eligibility for an accelerated rehabilitative program (ARD), along with other penalties. First-time, lower-BAC offenders may qualify for ARD, though penalties and eligibility depend on the specifics of the case.
  73. Before issuing a learner's permit, PennDOT requires applicants to pass:
Answer: A vision screening and the knowledge exam. Both a vision screening and the written knowledge test must be passed to get a permit.
  74. While driving on a learner's permit, a supervising driver must:
Answer: Be at least 18, licensed for the vehicle class, and sit in the front passenger seat. A licensed supervising driver — 18 or older and qualified for that class of vehicle — must occupy the front passenger seat at all times.
  75. For an applicant under 18, a parent or guardian must certify supervised practice hours using:
Answer: A signed supervised-driving log (certification of practice hours). PA requires a signed certification of the required supervised hours before scheduling the road test.
  76. A junior license holder (under 18) may generally carry how many passengers under 18 who aren't immediate family, for the first six months?
Answer: Only one. New junior license holders are limited to one non-family passenger under 18 for the first six months.
  77. If you fail the road test, you must generally wait before retaking it:
Answer: A short waiting period set by PennDOT. There is a mandatory short waiting period between road test attempts.
  78. A learner's permit that has expired can typically be:
Answer: Renewed or extended through PennDOT. An expired permit can be extended or renewed through PennDOT rather than starting the process over.
  79. PennDOT may require a driver to retake the knowledge test if:
Answer: They accumulate enough violation points, or their license is suspended for certain reasons. Accumulating points to a set threshold, or certain suspensions, can trigger a required retest.
  80. A junior license in PA loses its curfew and passenger restrictions at:
Answer: Age 18. Junior license restrictions (curfew, passenger limits) lift once the driver turns 18.
  81. When you move to Pennsylvania from another state, you must generally get a PA driver's license:
Answer: Within about 60 days of establishing residency. New PA residents are generally required to obtain a PA license within about 60 days.
  82. Driving with a suspended license in Pennsylvania:
Answer: Is illegal and can lead to fines, further suspension or jail time. Driving on a suspended license carries real criminal and licensing consequences.
  83. You must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights on a divided highway only if:
Answer: You are traveling in the same direction as the bus, or there's no physical median. On a highway with a physical median or barrier, oncoming traffic doesn't have to stop — but same-direction traffic still must.
  84. Passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing and the stop arm out is:
Answer: A serious violation that can include license suspension. Illegally passing a school bus is treated as a serious violation in PA, with real license consequences.
  85. Pennsylvania's 'Move Over' law requires drivers approaching a stopped emergency, tow or utility vehicle with flashing lights to:
Answer: Move over a lane if possible, or slow down significantly if they can't. Move over into a non-adjacent lane if safe, or reduce speed well below the limit if you can't move over.
  86. At a railroad crossing with flashing lights but no gate, you must:
Answer: Stop and wait until it is safe to cross. Flashing lights at a crossing mean stop and wait, gate or no gate.
  87. If your vehicle stalls on railroad tracks with a train approaching, you should:
Answer: Get everyone out and away from the tracks immediately, then call for help. Evacuate immediately, moving away from the direction the train is coming from — a car is replaceable, a life isn't.
  88. In an active work zone, PA law requires drivers to:
Answer: Follow all posted reduced speed limits; increased fines apply for violations. Posted work-zone limits are enforceable whenever the zone is active, with doubled fines.
  89. When an ambulance or fire truck approaches from behind with lights and siren on a multi-lane road, you should:
Answer: Pull to the right and stop until it passes. Always yield right-of-way by pulling right and stopping, unless directed otherwise by an officer.
  90. You must not follow within ___ of a fire truck or other emergency vehicle responding to a call.
Answer: 500 feet. PA law requires staying at least 500 feet behind a responding emergency vehicle.
  91. Driving through a work zone, if a flagger signals you to stop, you must:
Answer: Stop and wait for their signal to proceed. A flagger's stop signal has the same legal weight as a stop sign or red light.
  92. Tow-away zones near a roadway incident are marked so that:
Answer: Vehicles parked there will be towed at the owner's expense. Tow-away zones exist to keep incident scenes clear; parking there risks your vehicle being towed.
  93. Pennsylvania's headlight law requires them on both from sunset to sunrise and:
Answer: Whenever your windshield wipers are in continuous or intermittent use. PA's 'wipers-on, lights-on' law adds to the standard sunset-to-sunrise requirement.
  94. You should dim your high-beam headlights when an oncoming vehicle is within about:
Answer: 500 feet. Switch to low beams within roughly 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle, and about 300 feet when following another car.
  95. Pennsylvania requires most vehicles to pass a safety inspection:
Answer: Annually. PA requires an annual vehicle safety inspection, with emissions testing added in certain counties.

Answer: Fines and possible registration or license suspension. Failure to carry proof of financial responsibility carries real fines and suspension risk.
  98. A vehicle's registration in Pennsylvania must generally be renewed:
Answer: Every year. PA registration is renewed annually.
  99. Excessively tinted front side windows are:
Answer: Restricted — PA sets minimum light-transmission requirements. PA restricts how dark front side windows can be tinted, to preserve driver visibility.
  100. If your vehicle's exhaust system becomes excessively loud due to damage or modification, it:
Answer: Can fail inspection and result in a citation. Excessive noise from a defective or modified exhaust is a real inspection and citation issue.
  101. A bicyclist riding on the roadway generally has:
Answer: The same rights and duties as any other vehicle driver. Bicycles are legally treated as vehicles, with the same basic rights and responsibilities.
  102. A motorcycle is entitled to:
Answer: A full lane width, just like a car. A motorcycle has full use of a traffic lane; other drivers should never try to share a lane with one.
  103. Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet requirement generally applies to:
Answer: Riders under 21, and newer riders, unless additional conditions are met. PA requires helmets for younger or newer riders; more experienced adult riders may qualify for an exemption under specific conditions.
  104. When a pedestrian using a white cane or guide dog is crossing, drivers must:
Answer: Come to a complete stop until they've crossed. PA law requires drivers to stop completely for a pedestrian using a white cane or guide dog.
  105. Opening a car door into traffic or a bike lane without checking is:
Answer: A potential violation by the person opening the door. 'Dooring' — opening a door into moving traffic — is a citable offense in Pennsylvania.
  106. At a crosswalk without a traffic signal, drivers must:
Answer: Yield to pedestrians who are crossing or clearly about to cross. Even unsignalized crosswalks require drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing or preparing to cross.
  107. Amish horse-drawn buggies on the road are:
Answer: Legal, slow-moving vehicles that other traffic must pass carefully. Buggies are lawful slow-moving vehicles — pass only when safe, giving them plenty of room, and watch for the slow-moving-vehicle emblem.
  108. If your vehicle begins to skid, you should:
Answer: Steer gently toward where you want the front of the car to go and ease off the gas. Steer gently toward where you want to go and avoid hard braking, which can worsen a skid.
  109. Driving in fog, you should use:
Answer: Low beams, since high beams reflect and reduce visibility. High beams bounce light back off fog into your eyes; low beams (and fog lights, if equipped) work better.
  110. In heavy rain, if you can't see the lane markings or other vehicles clearly, you should:
Answer: Slow down, increase following distance, or safely pull over until it clears. Reduce speed, add distance, and if visibility is truly unsafe, pull off the road until conditions improve.
  111. Overdriving your headlights means:
Answer: Driving faster than you can stop within your headlights' sight distance. Overdriving your headlights — going faster than you can stop within your sight distance — is a leading cause of night crashes.
  112. If you experience a tire blowout while driving, you should:
Answer: Ease off the gas, hold the wheel steady, and slow gradually before pulling over. Resist the urge to brake hard; let the car slow naturally while keeping steady steering control.
  113. Driving through standing water on the road, hydroplaning is more likely if you:
Answer: Drive fast with worn tires. Higher speed plus worn tread dramatically increases hydroplaning risk in standing water.
  114. If caught in high winds, common for trucks and high-profile vehicles, you should:
Answer: Slow down and keep a firm, steady grip on the wheel. Reduce speed and anticipate sudden gusts, especially in open areas, on bridges, or when passing large trucks.
  115. After driving through deep water, you should test your brakes gently because:
Answer: Wet brakes can be less effective until dried out. Water on brake components reduces friction — tap the brakes gently at low speed to help dry them out.
  116. Under Pennsylvania's hands-free driving law, drivers may generally:
Answer: Not hold or manually use a mobile phone while driving, except in specific emergencies. Pennsylvania's hands-free law restricts holding or manually operating a phone while driving; hands-free or voice-activated use is generally the legal way to stay connected.
  117. Texting while driving in Pennsylvania is:
Answer: Illegal for all drivers, at all times the vehicle is in motion. Pennsylvania bans texting while driving for all drivers, regardless of age, whenever the vehicle is in motion.
  118. Eating, adjusting the radio, or reaching for something while driving are all examples of:
Answer: Distracted driving. Any activity that takes your attention, hands or eyes off driving counts as a form of distraction.
  119. The safest way to handle an incoming phone call while driving is to:
Answer: Let it go to voicemail, or use a proper hands-free system if truly necessary. Letting calls wait, or using a proper hands-free system, keeps your attention on the road.
  120. A GPS or navigation destination should be programmed:
Answer: Only before or while stopped, not while driving. Set your destination before you start driving; adjusting a screen while moving is a form of distraction.
  121. Pennsylvania law requires seat belts for:
Answer: The driver and all front-seat occupants, plus all passengers under 18 anywhere in the vehicle. Front-seat occupants and every passenger under 18 must be buckled, regardless of seating position.
  122. Children under 2 years old in Pennsylvania must ride in:
Answer: A rear-facing car seat, until they exceed the seat's height/weight limit. PA law requires rear-facing car seats for children under 2, or until they outgrow the seat's limits.
  123. A booster seat is generally required for a child until they:
Answer: Reach age 8 or about 4 feet 9 inches tall, whichever comes first. PA requires a booster seat up to age 8 or until the child reaches about 4'9" — whichever happens first.
  124. The safest seating position for children under 13 is:
Answer: The back seat. Children under 13 should ride in the back seat, away from an active front airbag.
  125. An airbag deploying can be dangerous for a young child because:
Answer: The force can seriously injure a small or rear-facing child sitting too close. The force of a deploying airbag can seriously injure a small child, which is why rear-facing seats never belong in the front.
  126. For an adult passenger, PA's seat belt law for front-seat occupants is generally enforced as:
Answer: A secondary offense — police must have another reason to stop the vehicle first. For adults in the front seat, PA generally treats unbelted riding as a secondary offense; the rule for anyone under 18 is primary.

What the real PA knowledge test covers

PennDOT draws its 18 questions from the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), and they cluster into a handful of predictable topics. If you can answer these confidently, the exam holds few surprises:

  • Speed limits. 25 mph in a residential district unless posted otherwise, 15 mph in an active school zone, 65 mph only where signed on limited-access highways.
  • Signs, signals and markings. Shape and color tell you the meaning before you can read the words — an octagon is always a stop, a yellow diamond always a warning, a solid white line discourages a lane change while a solid yellow forbids passing.
  • Right of way. Four-way stops, uncontrolled intersections, left turns across traffic, and yielding to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks alike.
  • School buses and emergency vehicles. Stop at least ten feet from a bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm out, in both directions unless divided by a barrier. Pennsylvania's Steer Clear law requires you to move over or slow down for emergency responders.
  • Following distance and stopping. Four seconds in good conditions, more in rain, snow or fog — and remember that stopping distance grows with the square of your speed, not in step with it.
  • Alcohol, drugs and penalties. A 0.08% BAC limit for drivers 21 and over, 0.02% for anyone under 21, and Pennsylvania's implied-consent rule on chemical testing.
  • Permit and licensing rules. Who may supervise you, the 65-hour practice requirement for under-18 drivers, and the junior-license night and passenger restrictions.

The one topic that catches people out is not a rule at all: how much of the manual they skipped. Read it twice, take this quiz until you're barely missing any, then book the test.

Questions we get about the permit test

How many questions are on the PA permit test? +

Eighteen multiple-choice questions, drawn from the PA Driver's Manual. You need 15 correct — that's a passing score of about 83%. You also take a vision screening at the same visit.

How many questions are in your practice quiz? +

126 — far more than the real 18-question PennDOT exam, so you get broad repetition instead of memorizing a short list. It's scored instantly, with an explanation for every answer, and the passing bar is scaled to the same 83% the real test requires.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test? +

You can retake it from the next business day, while your DL-180 is still valid (a year from the date of your physical). Use the gap to re-read the manual, which matters more than memorizing a practice quiz.

Is the PA knowledge test available in other languages? +

Yes — PennDOT offers the knowledge test in several languages, and audio versions are available for applicants who need them. Ask at the counter when you arrive. Our own lessons are taught in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Arabic, so you can learn in the language you think in.

Do I need the DL-180 form before the test? +

Yes. First-time applicants need a completed DL-180 physical exam form signed by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or chiropractor, plus original proof of identity, a Social Security card, and, if you're 18 or older, two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. Turning up without it is the single most common wasted trip. Our permit requirements guide lists every document.

How soon after the permit can I take the road test? +

If you're under 18, you must hold the permit for at least six months and log 65 hours of supervised practice — 10 at night and 5 in poor weather — before the road test. Adults 18 and over have no minimum holding period, but still need to be genuinely ready. See what the road test involves.

Passed the practice test? Here's your next step

Once you hold your learner's permit, Pennsylvania requires 65 hours of supervised practice (if you're under 18) before the road test — and every hour counts more with a professional in the passenger seat. Our instructors teach in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Arabic, with free door-to-door pickup across 100+ Greater Philadelphia towns.
