Highway driving lessons, from first on-ramp to the Schuylkill
Passed your test but still take back roads to avoid the highway? These lessons take you from a quiet on-ramp to confident merging on the Schuylkill Expressway, I-95 and the Blue Route, one step at a time.
Highway Driving: how it works
Plenty of licensed drivers never really learned the highway. The road test gets you a license, and then the first time you face a short on-ramp onto the Schuylkill or a lane that suddenly ends on I-95, you are doing it alone. Highway lessons fix that with the same thing that fixed everything else: practice with someone calm in the passenger seat, in a car with a second brake.
We start where the traffic is forgiving: a long on-ramp at a quiet time of day, a few miles in the right lane, and an easy exit. Once matching speed and choosing a gap feel routine, we add lane changes, blind-spot checks at speed, and planning an exit a mile ahead instead of at the last second.
Then we take on the roads Philadelphia drivers actually worry about. The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) has short merges and left-hand exits; I-95 through the city has lanes that end and busy interchanges; the Blue Route (I-476) is faster and hillier; Roosevelt Boulevard has inner and outer lanes with lights across both. We choose the ones on your real commute, so the practice is the drive you will do on Monday.
Highway lessons are booked like any other lesson, $75 an hour with a two-hour minimum, and most drivers need one to three sessions. Your instructor picks you up at home, and we teach in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla or Arabic, so nothing gets lost in translation at 55 miles an hour.

Common questions
I already have my license. Can I still take highway lessons? +
Yes. Most of our highway students are licensed drivers who avoid highways. The lessons are the same private lessons we give anyone, just focused on on-ramps, merging and lane changes.
Which highways do you practice on? +
The ones near you and on your commute: the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76), I-95, the Blue Route (I-476), the Turnpike, Route 422, Route 309 and Roosevelt Boulevard are the usual ones.
How many lessons will I need? +
Most drivers are comfortable after one to three two-hour sessions. We start on an easy stretch and only move to busier roads when the easy one feels routine.
Can we practice in my own car? +
We teach in our dual-control car, which is safer while you are learning to merge. Once you are comfortable, we can talk about a session in your own car.
